Officially licensed by Nirvanna the Band the Show, this 24 × 36 inch print celebrates Matt Johnson and Jay McCarrol's lifelong pursuit of one seemingly impossible goal: playing the Rivoli.
Featuring artwork by Nick Low, the composition is inspired by the film's time-travelling story, folding decades into a single cinematic moment. Younger and older Matt and Jay stand face to face as Toronto's past and present collide in a richly layered composition, filled with hidden references and visual callbacks celebrating nearly two decades of Nirvanna the Band.
More than a movie poster, it's a tribute to one of Canada's most enduring friendships – and the impossible dream that has kept Matt and Jay moving forward through every plan, timeline, and spectacular detour.
Artist statement
Much like the film itself, we had the tough task of incorporating all of these moments and pieces of pop culture without completely leaning on them. Time travel is obviously central to the story, but I wanted the focus to be less on the mechanics of it and more on the way time both brings Matt and Jay closer together and pushes them apart.
Early on, I explored that idea through different fandoms I imagined their friendship was built on. We had everything from Matt and Jay as Street Fighter characters to a riff on Michelangelo's Creation of Adam. As the piece evolved, we kept coming back to what mattered most: their friendship, what had changed, and what had stayed the same.
I also wanted Toronto to feel like more than just a backdrop. It's a city that evolves alongside them, reflecting the changes in their relationship while remaining the place that brought them together in the first place. Sometimes fate decides that simply growing up in the same neighbourhood is enough for someone to become the most important person in your life.
Like the best buddy comedies, Nirvanna the Band the Show: The Movie makes you think about all the hilarious moments – and sometimes the hard ones – you've shared with someone you've had the privilege to grow up alongside. Hopefully we've captured a little of that Orbitz in a bottle.
